Lightroom

Lightroom Feature

A while back I tweeted about using Lightroom for editing my photos. Shortly after I was contacted by a company that does marketing for Adobe asking if I’d like to answer a few questions as to how I used Lightroom to get a certain look on one of my photos the found online. I obliged and I’ve now been featured a couple of times on the Adobe Ligthroom website. I’ve been using lightroom for a few years and it really makes editing and organizing photos a breeze. They’ve just released LR3 so if you get a chance check it out.

Filling the Portfolio

I have a plan to fill my photo portfolio with things that I want people to pay me to shoot. Outdoorsie type stuff, running, biking, hiking, kyaking, climbing, etc… I’ve listened to Zack Arias talk about showing what you want to shoot in your portfolio and it just makes sense. I wouldn’t practice tennis if I wanted to play golf. While the technical side of things tend to cross over, the composition and knowing where the action is going to be takes practice.
The other night I asked a friend if she’d be willing to be a running model, She agreed and we headed up to Horsetooth Reservoir in Fort Collins, CO to give it a shot. My wife (38 weeks pregnant) was my voice activated light stand. I managed to get a couple of good shots at the first angle, but when I moved I didn’t switch settings and ended up with some blurred shots. All in all it was a good start to filling the portfolio.

100 Day Project

Sometimes you just don’t feel very creative. Trying to find ways to keep the creative juices flowing I’ve decided to do a 100 day project. Some people do the whole 365 projects, but I’ll be honest I don’t think that I can keep up with that without resorting to terrible shots with my cell phone. So I’m going to give the 100 day project a try. My only limit is it has to be something that helps aid in my creativity. So anything really photo, video, design, editing, etc… It just has to have some thought behind it. I’ll be posting all 100 days on the blog here and keeping updated on the facebook page. Day one starts today. Day 100 is June 13 if you’re keeping track.

Sony EX1

Sample Shots from Sony EX1 from Dion Dolva on Vimeo.

Since I’ve been laid off I’ve had the opportunity to work with a few new cameras, the Sony EX1, Canon Vixia HFS100, Canon 5D MII and soon the Nikon D300s.  Here’s a small clip that I put together from a couple of shoots with the EX1. I’d love to give a review, but I’ll be honest I’m not a real “technical” guy. I know how to work a # of different cameras an I know how to make things look good.

November Wallpaper

I’ve been helping my mother-in-law out doing web and design stuff for her yarn store in Fargo, ND, Prairie Yarns. It’s a great little yarn store if you happen to be in the area. Anyway, I’ve started to create monthly desktop wallpapers for download on their site. I’m taking the photos and designing them up myself. I really like the way November turned out.
